Probably, indeed, the larger part of the labor of an author composing his work is critical labor; the labor of sifting, combining, constructing, expunging, correcting, testing. This frightful toil is as much critical as creative. ~T.S. Eliot
The real secret of magic is that the world is made of words, and that if you know the words that the world is made of you can make of it whatever you wish. ~Terence McKenna
Tell the readers a story! Because without a story, you are merely using words to prove you can string them together in logical sentences. ~Anne McCaffrey
The beautiful part of writing is that you don't have to get it right the first time, unlike, say, a brain surgeon. ~Robert Cormier
If you don't feel that you are possibly on the edge of humiliating yourself, of losing control of the whole thing, then probably what you are doing isn't very vital. If you don't feel like you are writing somewhat over your head, why do it? If you don't have some doubt of your authority to tell this story, then you are not trying to tell enough. ~ John Irving
Sometimes making stuff up feels a lot like Coyote* running across the empty space between one rocky pinnacle and the next, and as long as you keep moving you're fine. When you stop and look down, it's suddenly all too apparent that there's absolutely nothing underneath and that you're keeping in the air by a peculiar effort of will.
And then a good day comes, and you start running through the air once again, and, if you're smart, you resolutely don't look down. ~Neil Gaiman
You just let me know when you make it to Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York or Chicago... and I will do my darndest to be there!!! But if you want to cut out the middle man (and my driving) just come to Cleveland! I have an incredibly uncomfortable couch for you to sleep on. :D (Is my halo on straight? *frantically checks* Is it even on?!)
I'd love to, but no go...traveling anywhere but from my house to work and to the hospital for my daughter is OUT for the next several months! Wanna come here? I'll meet ya in the cities and there are lots of people there! Lol!
Just wanted to say a big Thank You for signing a copy of your book for me today. Also for providing some motivation for me to continue my writing. It was a great pleasure to meet you; I am glad that I showed up at B&N at the right time!
Yep its Tony. I made this account just so I could talk to you. I have written two nights in a row (every night since I met you) now; I had forgot how fun it is. Thanks again for the motivation, your a life saver!
Great! Good for you. And I'm glad you're here. There's lots of cool writers here in lj so you should keep your eyes open. I'm closing in on the end of my revisions. Hoping to finish tonight. I may have to not sleep at all to do it, but it will be nice to be really really done. (until the edits come back of course). Sigh.
ick. plauge. Many sympathies. I plan to be at Miscon. And going to Radcon I hope. (which is over in WA in Pasco/Tri-cities). That reminds me, I need to make hotel reservations for both . . . .
