I am remiss
2nd-May-2008 03:29 pm
You guys mentioned some of the coolest books in the last post. And I plan to comment and followup, but you made me also think of something that I've been remiss about. Duh.

Okay, so there are some new books out that I've been wanting to go get. Waiting for to go get.

They include:

[info]suricattus's new Wren and Sergei book (Retrievers book) Free Fall.

[info]mizkit's The Queen's Bastard (I love her Urban Shaman and Walker Papers books. You really should try them out).

Lisa Shearin's Armed and Magical (sequel to Magic Lost, Trouble Found, which I loved)

[info]smokingpigeon's The Brass Bed (been looking forward to this one for awhile and the second and third books will be coming close on its heels in June and July I believe).

[info]frost_light's One Foot in the Grave (sequel to Halfway to the Grave and I've been waiting to hang out with Bones again.)

Tate Hallaway's Romancing the Dead (interview with her posted here)

Jeri Smith-Ready's Wicked Game And the worst part is she's got other books out that I've forgotten that I wanted to get, so this is just a tip of the iceberg. *points to icon* Exactly so.

I know there are more, but these I've been jonesing for--just this month. Next month there are more coming out. How am I ever going to keep up?

So what books are you jonesing for? On your shopping list?

I already got to read Wicked Game. *is smug* Really fun -- I like Jeri's style, but when I heard "vampires" I went "oh no, not more... but she made me totally eat those words. Lots of fun.

I'm not even looking at what's coming out for, oh, *counts months to biggest deadline* another three months. Then I get to go shopping again.

A new Nightrunner book in something like three months . . . Oh, no, I didn't say that.

I have a long drive tomorrow with a doctor's appointment in the middle so I figure there will be some reading time. Now to narrow the list. But then all those books I need to get and . . . Sigh. And I need to reread the Cosa Nostra books because, well, I want to!

Bad you.

The Black Ship!!

Uh, let's see... I've been dying to jump on Mark Henry's 'Happy Hour of the Damned'. Just got Rob Thurman's 'Nightlife' and I'm enjoying it a lot so I'm looking forward to her other books once I can get some flow. Jim Butcher's new Dresden book 'Small Favours'. C.E. Murphy's 'Urban Shaman' comes highly recommended, and I'm itching to jump into Steven Erikson's 'Reaper's Gale'. Also saw a book called 'Whitechapel Gods' by S.M. Peters that looks like it'd be up my alley (London run by machine deities, woo hoo!). And I've read suricattus' blog a few times through yours and I love the way she writes so I'm going to be checking out 'Staying Dead' next.

I've not read Seven Erikson and I confess to being woefully behind on the Butcher books. Ack! I've got some, but just haven't read them. And I got the Furies books so I need to read those . . . I want to read the Peters book too, same reason.

And yes, the Retreivers books are excellent. Sigh. Can we just make the days longer?

I've always set aside an hour to read before I go to sleep, regardless of what time I actually get to bed. The only real drawback to this system is that now my body is keyed to think reading = sleepy time and as soon as I crack a book I'm face down snoring and drooling.

John Sandford's Phantom Prey is coming out this week. Numero uno on my to be read list, as just about anything by the guy automatically gets bumped up to the top.

I'm also jonesing to try Charlie Huston's vampire novels, several futuristic weapons, vehicle, and ship compendiums, and any new-ish fantasy epics I can get my hands on. I haven't read a new author in an epic fantasy in a while.

And oddly, despite my recent gluttony on them, I'm still craving short stories.
4th-May-2008 04:51 pm (UTC)
I've not read Sandford or Huston. Hmmm.

You know that Jim Butcher has the furies series--epic fantasy. And Kate Elliot's Crown of Stars series (complete now) rocks. She's got a new series going now too. Also rocking.

I'll check those out ASAP. Picked up a Dragonlance novel by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Digging the heck out of it.
3rd-May-2008 12:02 am (UTC)
I just got back in from pursuit of my lawful prey as it were, and I picked up all you mentioned (and several other books in differnt genres) except the last two , they werent on the shelves yet.

I am always jonesing for a new book, it doesnt matter what it is, I know there is a book out there I havent touched/fondled/or bought yet and its calling my name.. sometimes its just a lovecraftian whisper, but, books.. booooooookkksss. *twitch twitch*
4th-May-2008 04:52 pm (UTC)
Not on the shelves yet? Damnnnnnnnnnnn. Okay, that just means electronic shopping. No big deal, breathing slow . . .

I have that same book thing going on!

that was only one days prey, I was out and about yesterday and picked up the others. A friend also loaned me the ARC of the new Novik installment, so I have a veritable pile of indulgences to coo over.

*put the books down, back away slowwwwly*

I got home to find a package on my doorstep, containing Head Games - I can't wait to get started!
4th-May-2008 04:53 pm (UTC)
I haven't heard of it . . . tell me how it is. Review!

So what books are you jonesing for? On your shopping list?

Top of the list is August 5 for Sherrilyn Kenyon's long awaited ACHERON.

Also in August I'm waiting for Deborah Cooke's latest Dragonforge books.

In September for the newest in Jennifer Ashley, Robin Popp, Joy Nash's Immortal series

Also the third book in the Lady Penitent by Lisa Smeldman for my drow-elf fix
4th-May-2008 04:54 pm (UTC)
I can't believe you are taunting me with August and September books. But while you are, don't forget the new Patti Briggs book in August, and the new Lynn Flewelling Nightrunner book . . .

Oh, dear.

Di
4th-May-2008 05:18 pm (UTC)
Ooooh. Well, I'll have to add Patti Briggs to the books I want in August. By the fates I'm not gonna have money that month.. I can say it's a month early b-day present.

Never read Lynn Flewelling

I'm after the third book in _The Sharing Knife_ by Lois McMaster Bujold.

I'd like to recommend one that I read recently, though: _The Aphorisms of Kherishdar_ by M.C.A. Hogarth.
http://www.amazon.com/Aphorisms-Kherishdar-M-C-Hogarth/dp/1434891127/
This is some of the best sociological SF I've ever read. The illustrations are glorious too.
4th-May-2008 04:54 pm (UTC) - Re: Thoughts
I have heard such excellent things about the Sharing Knife series, but I haven't picked it up yet. Methinks I need to.

4th-May-2008 04:58 pm (UTC) - Re: Thoughts
I recently wrote a class about The Sharing Knife: Beguilement for the Grey School of Wizardry, because the description of magic is so apt and because the antagonistic principle is so evocative. There are some very fresh renditions of old favorite motifs, like The Implacable Evil. Also it's Lois doing what she does best, which is forcing stultified characters through painful and beautiful growth. Most highly recommended.

Just read Dakota Cassidy and her next book comes out in June. Erg.
Always with the sequels... Ilona Andrew's third book; Mark Henry's sequel Road Trip of the Living Dead (I think I got that right); and of course!! The Black Ship!!!

But my book buying days are over for while since I counted my stack of 70 and bought like 13 at RT. oops!!
4th-May-2008 04:55 pm (UTC)
I read what you said about DC on your blog. Made me want to pick up her books too. When is Mark's book out? I can't even think about the next Kate book--it won't be out for way too long. Sigh.

You keep a stack? You count them? That's crazy-making. I just shove them on my shelves and try to read as often as I can.
4th-May-2008 06:54 pm (UTC)
Stacks stay near my bed so new drugs are well within reach (and so I remember which ones I haven't read). Stacks got so big, I finally counted. One of my LJ'er friends and I were comparing. I topped out at 70 and she won with 107.

Mark's second is slated for March 2009, I believe. I haven't read it but apparently his editor sent it back with NO CHANGES and Mark about peed himself and so is going through another set of edits himself, sure there must be something that can be better. He has another series he's working on as well but I have no clue when they are thinking of publishing that.
3rd-May-2008 04:06 pm (UTC)
I too got C E Murphy and Frost. Already read Shearin's Amred & Magical. Also just finished Katie MacAlister's latest, as well as Meg Cabot's Heather Wells Mystery trio. But I too have a huge pile o' books to get through. It's rather daunting and exciting at the same time.
4th-May-2008 04:57 pm (UTC)
How was Armed and Magical? That book pile never gets smaller, does it? But nice to know that you have books at your fingertips to just read, eh?

Di
4th-May-2008 06:56 pm (UTC)
Did you read Magic Lost, Trouble Found? It took me a few pages to get into, but then I was hooked. It cracked me up.
5th-May-2008 02:42 am (UTC)
In a lot of ways, I liked it even more than the first book. I really enjoy her protagonist Raine. She's fun to read and easy to relate to. Plus you get an even more in depth look at the two male leads. I'd have a hard time choosing if I were Raine. I am very much looking forward to book 3, they are a bunch of fun. Takes me back to the high school D&D days - you know, elves and mages and all that. There I said it out loud. I was a dork, but I'm better now. Honest.
