things you won't buy, businesses you won't deal with
2nd-Oct-2006 10:13 am

It annoys me (a lot) when businesses are non responsive, or don't bother with customers, or sell shoddy stuff with warranties they have all kinds of fine print on, and so I have decided I'm going to have a list of which things I won't buy, and which companies I won't do business with, which will include a short explanation.  I'd like to hear yours too.  So call this a meme (what exactly is a meme anyhow?) and in the comments or on your own blog, pick it up and say what you think.  I mean, they think we won't talk to each other or take advice from each other.  Let's show them that we are not only paying attention, but that it will hit them in the pocket book.

So mine are, in no particular order . . .

LaZboy.  Utter crap workmanship (ignore the warranty--they don't really do what they say).  I guess they used to be good, but to save money have gone to low quality everything.  I've written the CEO several letters, and his only response is to pawn me off on customer service reps who tell me that I am wrong about the problems with my furniture, that I it was impossible that I had to wait something like six months for repair parts (even though I did) and that they didn't actually have to be polite to me because they already had my money and they haven't the foresight to think that they might ever want more in the future.  Which they will never ever ever, did I say ever?  Get.

Sony.  We have had a problem with the Playstation 2 since we got it.  It won't play disks that have the blueish/purplish back.  At all.  We had it repaired once, which didn't take.  And letters (again to the ceo after I tried customer service) were pawned off on customer service who only repeated themselves (why bother even responding if you don't plan to be remotely helpful?) and who have essentially told us that our business doesn't matter.  I won't be buying anything sony ever if I can help it--that means music, games, electronic equipment, whatever.  Same thing as LaZboy, we have your money and we don't care about you anymore!

Marriott Hotels  This is recent.  I want to extend my WFC stay by a day.  A day.  I have a reservation already.  But they won't let me have the con rate for that one more day, instead they want me to pay double.  And what's worse, when I got a customer rep at corporate, hoping she could help me, she lectured me about how this was her job and I shouldn't attempt to ask anymore and she does this every day and when she says it can't be done it can't and she wouldn't let me speak.  She was the snotty as hell and I was really, really, really polite because I didn't want to even hint at a bad name for writers or participants in the con.  Then I tried back at the hotel, but Patti Long, who they referred me to, won't pick up her phone or return my call.  Dead silence.  Well, a speaking silence.  She couldn't care any less.  Or else she's too busy to do her job.  I think Marriott Hotels rank right up there with the we may be a service industry but we don't really want to serve so much as gouge you for all you're worth.  Won't stay there ever again if I can avoid it.  Just left another message.  Will she call back this time?  I'll let you know.

NEWS!  So it turns out that Patti Long is a goddess and wonderful human being.  I"m so glad I managed to be polite because I hate being obnoxious to nice people who ARE indeed, doing their jobs.  So get to get into the hotel at the conference rate on Nov 1.  Now, what that means is the WFC hotel rocks (because everyone I dealt with there was helpful and polite) but that the corporate suit was not.  So again, She rocks!

There are more, but I'll save them for later, adding them to my list.  Now, tell me about yours.  I really want to know.  If you put them on your journal, let me know and I'll post the links.

Di

edited to add:  Oh, and I will also be asking who did wonderful things for you as far as customer service because, well, we should seriously celebrate THEM.

A little advice for the PS2 problem:

The first series was completely buggy and they would only repair it once. I know because my husband's family bought one the same week it came out. When my husband and I got married, we bought our own PS2 and haven't had nearly as much trouble as his family had. Both units eventually quit playing movies and CD's, and the first series unit quit playing PS2 games while ours quit playing PS1 games. However, we were able to get both units to play all of these disks again. Since the units were old enough to be out of warrenty (and you'd want to make sure of this before you try it or ask someone to try it for you), my husband's little brother found a website detailing the most common problems with the PS2 units and how to fix them. I don't know the site, or I'd link you. The main problem, and what was causing both of these units to stop working, was a high dust intake. Some of the inner componants won't work because little dust particles get in there and reroute circuits. So my husband's little brother followed the instructions on the website, cracked the casing on the PS2's, and cleaned all the dust out of both units with a can of compressed air. Night and day difference.

To add a bit to this post, never ever buy a game console until about a year after its launch. They just tend to be too darn buggy. I bought a new Xbox 360 in January, and immediately regretted it when it started to scratch my disks. It ruined a good copy of Titus, too. Nobody messes with my Shakespeare. Thankfully, though, the company I bought it from was decent (Sam's Club - see below), and returned it with no questions asked.

yeah, well, we haven't bought anything else yet. Though I have a fondness for Nintendo, really. But thanks angikate for the info on the fix. I'm going to try to hunt that down.

To add to what my wife said about PS2 and systems(and by proxy Sony), the only companies I ever knew about that were (and are) good at making game systems work at the time they are first released would be Nintendo and Sega. Since Sega is out of the console business, and I usually dislike (but deal with on as limited a basis I can) Microsoft, That really leaves Nintendo as the only current system maker that gets it right at launch time.

Sony just doesn't understand anything but "buyer beware". I still buy things from them, but only after waiting to see what new goofs & bugs their stuff has. :)

I have a Sony Vaio as a laptop and have learned some stuff about Sony. Sony's customer care is awful the warrenties are lousy. but they make a good product (at least from a computer perspective) my laptop is almost 3 years old is still pretty top-of-the-line and has only had things fixed when i was an idiot (broke the monitor)

now how did you break your monitor? And you know, this company thing is a ymmv, but you know, I still won't end up supporting Sony if I can help it. Too irritated by their response.

the power converter thing on the laptop (the big box) was sitting on my keyboard, i reached forward, not realizing it, closed the monitor down onto the box and cracked the monitor. oops. flipping thing cost 900 dollars to fix. Who knew that the most expensive part of a laptop is the monitor? i sure didnt. All-in-all i decided it was worth it, my computer cost me oh, 1400 and is still running really really well. Cant complain too much. what is a ymmv?

Dell. You've heard Dell Hell, right?
The quality of Dell computers stinks (quite ticky tacky and shoddy) and the customer service really stinks and is outsourced (guess where) so when you try to return your Dell pooptastic item (that was the replacement item already) (the very next day because it didn't work) it is a battle the whole way. I actually had to sic Visa on them to get my refund. I wont be purchasing from them again.

I'm sorry to say it but this is The Way businesses operate nowadays. And we can't do anything to change it until enough people discontinue their shopping orgies and boycott these businesses.

I've had okay luck with dell so far, knock on wood, but I've heard some really awful things too. I wonder if mine have been okay because I didn't want anything special or unusual. And bland, whitebread sorts of things they can do well. Hmmm. On the other hand, I just bought a new ac adapter for my dell laptop, and it's been acting funny. Course that could be the sony battery too . . . .

Thanks for the heads-up on Lazy Boy (or however the hell they spell it). I'm going to buy a recliner soon, so it's good to know.

The only good company that comes to mind right off hand is Sam's Club - believe it or not, the Great Falls area Sam's Club has killer customer support. Too bad it costs so much for it.

I'm still looking for a decent business that will help me put together a computer specific to my needs. I tried a Dell, and it fell apart in just under two years. So if anyone knows of a decent company or individual business with a decent warranty and the ability to customize the hardware, let me know.

yeah, the furniture folks here in town said that LaZboy started using lower grade materials and that they wouldn't buy them. They really didn't have a good recommendation of what to buy though. It's apparently all fairly bad. I read somewhere recently that Ethan Allen carries higher quality stuff, though pricey. Ironically, when I had Quentin, we bought a couple of LaZboy rockers from an old couple and those chairs are freaking awesome! I mean, you can really tell the difference in worksmanship (or actually on the newer stuff, lack thereof).

I used to buy my stuff in Indiana from a local independent computer builder. Usually did good work and stood behind their stuff. Do you have someone local that is good in that way?

The new Computer Shopper will be out soon for the holidays. You could take a look through it to see how everything is rating this year. Then, wait for the holiday sales to make your purchase.

For myself, I wouldn't go U-build it with the small indie shops, everyone I know who has done that ended up with Frankencomputer and they had terrible problems and conflicts. I'd stick with the customizable name brand computers (except Dell).

Ah, thanks for the advice. I'll be wary of them. I looked at Alienware, but they seem awfully expensive. I don't really know what else is out there.
