best of lists and authors

I just ran across the B&N Year’s Best Fantasy List. There are two women writers on it. Now, I really don’t get this. Why are there only two? I understand that the other writers on the list were quite good, but at the same time, it seems strange to me that so many writers are women, and so many write the things that I love, and at the same time, only two made the list. Why is that?

If I scanned that right, only one novel was Urban Fantasy. That has me surprised that most of the novels were more "traditional" SFF.
It's funny. It used to be sword and sorcery or epic fantasy was considered sort of too popular to be good. I think that UF is that way now. Along with romance, of course.
It seems like an entirely personal list, too much so to get really riled up at it. I have nothing against the authors he listed, and will likely check out a couple of them, but there are some glaring omissions from the list and some odd choices that practically scream of either personal fandom or paid advertising. And the inclusion of what seems like one urban fantasy novel and one sci-fi military novel pretty much clinch the oddness of the list. I'd dismiss it and move on.
